It's Kevin's 40th Birthday y'all! Pandemic still rages on... so as much as we want to go on an epic international adventure, because of time and preferring to be closer to home... we decided to do a quick road trip to some of Iowa and check out it's coolest spots
Iowa Road Side Attractions
Snake Alley: The Crookedest Street in the World?
Snake Alley in Burlington, Iowa, is a must-see for any traveler looking for a unique and quirky experience. This winding, brick-paved street is one of the crookedest in the world, with five half-curves and two quarter-curves over a distance of just 275 feet. It's a fun and challenging place to drive, walk, or bike, and it's also a beautiful spot to take a photo.
Today, Snake Alley is a popular tourist attraction. Visitors from all over the world come to see the crooked street and test their driving or biking skills. The alley is also home to a number of annual events, including the Snake Alley Art Fair and the Snake Alley Criterium bike race.
If you're planning a trip to Snake Alley, here are a few things to keep in mind:
The alley is closed to vehicles in the winter.
The alley is narrow, so be careful when driving or biking.
Pedestrians should be aware of traffic and stay on the sidewalk.
There is no parking at Snake Alley, so you'll need to park nearby and walk.
The alley is located in a residential area, so please be respectful of the neighbors.
Snake Alley, similar to Lombard St in San Francisco is crooked but, Kevin and I agree, Snake Alley was a more pleasant experience because it is not as busy as Lombard St. so you can walk up and down the alley (if you want a workout) without having to contend a lot of car or pedestrian traffic.
Mars Hill Church: One of the Creepiest Places in Iowa
After 2 hours and a 10 lbs of dusts later.... we arrive at one the creepiest places in the state.
Mars Hill Church in Bloomfield, Iowa, is a historic log cabin church that is also known as one of the creepiest places in the state. The church was built in 1856 and was used as a stop on the Underground Railroad.
The church is rumored to be haunted by the ghosts of slaves who died while trying to escape to freedom. There have also been reports of satanic rituals being performed on the church grounds. We did not see any evidence of rituals though. There was also an Urban legend says that a woman had her child baptized in the church only to run to a bridge shortly after and throw her child. Visitors to the church have reported seeing strange lights, hearing voices, and feeling cold spots. Some have even reported being touched by unseen hands.
It is also the final resting place of veterans from every American war.
If you're looking for a scare, Mars Hill Church is the place for you. However, be warned: this is not a place for the faint of heart.
Hickory Grove Cemetery: Home to the Great Pyramids of Avery
1 or maybe 2 hours drive from one creepy place to the next (not sure on distance because I napped) we arrive at the Hickory Grove Cemetery.
Hickory Grove Cemetery in Avery, Iowa, is a unique and fascinating place to visit. We are glad we took the time to stop by even if it is a bit our of our way. The cemetery is home to three pyramids, which were built in 1939 by Axel Peterson, a local farmer and historian. Peterson was fascinated by ancient Egypt, and he built the pyramids to be his tomb and the tomb of his friend. Unfortunately due to some miscommunication his friend got buried somewhere else
We wanted to see if there is a tomb inside the pyramid. But upon further investigation (By Kevin because I ain't going inside there... snakes) no one is buried inside the pyramid. So maybe he got moved so he can truly be buried next to his friend.
