If you're planning a trip to Vietnam, a visit to the Mekong Delta is a must. You'll embark on a group tour that takes you through the heart of this vibrant and lush region. Here's a detailed itinerary of what to expect on this exciting day.

Tour Recommendations for the Mekong Delta

I cannot recommend booking a tour enough when visiting Vietnam. Why? When booking a tour they offer to pick you up from your hotel. Why is this a benefit? Because Vietnam traffic is nuts! The convenience of getting picked up from your hotel and sitting in a safe air-conditioned van is extremely convenient. Additionally, you get English-speaking tour guides that explain what is going on and the history of the area which you would need to truly appreciate the site that you are visiting.

With this I highly recommend Viator. It has every single tour you would want, the time you want, and how long the tour you want. Change your mind? It lets you cancel 24 hours before your scheduled tour

Hotel Recommendations for Touring the Mekong Delta

Recommended Pick-Up Time: 7:30 - 7:45 AM

Starting Point: Hotel lobby of your preferred hotel

I recommend a hearty breakfast at your hotel to prepare you for the day. A lot of hotels include breakfast with your booking. It saves you from looking for where to eat and it is very convenient if you just come down to the lobby to eat. Make sure to fuel up because a full day of exploration awaits.

Arrival at My Tho and Sampan Cruise

Location: My Tho

Activities: Sampan cruise, visit to islands

Upon arrival in My Tho, you'll board a sampan, a traditional wooden boat, and begin cruising down the Mekong River. The cruise takes you around four picturesque islands: Dragon, Unicorn, Phoenix, and Tortoise. Each island has its unique charm and beauty, but the first stop will be at Unicorn Island.

Unicorn Island Exploration

Activities: Country lane walk, orchards visit, folk music performance

Unicorn Island offers a delightful introduction to the Mekong Delta's rural life. As you walk around the country lanes, you'll encounter lush orchards and fruit plantations. Here, you can sample a variety of tropical fruits freshly picked from the trees. To add to the experience, you'll be treated to traditional folk songs performed by the local people, providing a melodious backdrop to the serene surroundings.

Thoi Son Canal and Local Workshops

Activity: Hand-rowed sampan ride

Next, you'll board a hand-rowed sampan and navigate through the tranquil Thoi Son canal. This narrow waterway, shaded by coconut palms, immerses you in the natural beauty of the countryside.

Along the way, you'll visit family-run workshops and a honey-bee farm. We enjoyed this particular stop especially since we got free samples!

Honey Tea and Coconut Candies

Activity: Taste honey tea and coconut candies

At the honey-bee farm, you'll have the opportunity to taste honey tea, a local delicacy known for its soothing and sweet flavor. Additionally, you'll get to try coconut candies, a traditional treat made fresh by the locals. I did try these even though I am not a fan of fruits. My family liked the candies... especially my mom who has a wicked sweet tooth! These stops provide a glimpse into the local craftsmanship and the simplicity of life in the Mekong Delta.

There however an offering that I did not partake in... because I try not to eat animals! It is the snake wine... eewww. My sister and Kevin tried it though. They said it was strong but did not taste any different.

Traditional Vietnamese Lunch

Meal: Lunch at a local restaurant

After a morning full of activities, it's time to refuel with a traditional Vietnamese lunch. The meal typically includes a variety of local dishes, allowing you to savor the authentic flavors of the region. As usual Vietnamese food is delicious!

Cycling Around Tan Thach Village

Activity: Cycling tour or hammock relaxation

Post-lunch, you'll have the option to cycle around Tan Thach village. This is a great way to meet the local villagers and experience their daily life up close. If cycling isn't your preference, you can opt to relax in a hammock, enjoying the cool breeze and the laid-back atmosphere of the village.
