"Matisse and the Sea" is the inaugural showcase that delves into the importance of marine themes throughout the career of Modernist painter Henri Matisse. This includes his works created in various coastal areas like the Mediterranean, the Atlantic, and the Pacific. The sea's imagery served as a crucial inspiration for Matisse, leading to significant artistic exploration, as seen notably in the Saint Louis Art Museum's renowned piece, "Bathers with a Turtle."

The building itself is a piece of history, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and located within the picturesque 426-acre Jefferson Barracks Park, just a 15-minute drive south of downtown St. Louis.

The Jefferson Barracks Telephone Museum offers a self-guided, accessible experience with many hands-on, educational, and fun displays. Beyond its extensive collection of telephones from the late 1800s through 2012, the museum also features a vast array of telephone-related memorabilia from the 1880s through the 2000s.
