When in Rome… visit Castel Sant’Angelo! As soon as we checked into our hotel, this was our very first stop. Nestled along the Tiber River, this historic fortress is a must-see, packed with centuries of history, stunning architecture, and some of the best panoramic views of Rome.

Once a mausoleum, later a fortress, then a papal refuge, and now a museum—Castel Sant’Angelo has worn many hats (or helmets?). If you’re planning a visit, here’s everything you need to know before exploring this fascinating site.

A Brief History of Castel Sant’Angelo

Castel Sant’Angelo's story begins in the 2nd century AD, when Emperor Hadrian built it as his grand mausoleum. But its destiny changed dramatically in 590 AD, when Pope Gregory the Great had a vision of Archangel Michaelsheathing his sword atop the castle, signaling the end of a devastating plague. From that moment, it became known as "Castle of the Holy Angel."

Although they were closed during our visit, Castel Sant’Angelo’s dungeons once held prisoners, including the famous sculptor Benvenuto Cellini. Imagine the stories those stone walls could tell!

Planning Your Visit to Castel Sant’Angelo

🕰️ Best Time to Visit Castel Sant’Angelo

We visited in March, when the temperatures were in the 60s (°F) during the day and 40s at night. Spring is ideal—comfortable weather, fewer crowds than summer, and lower chances of sweating through your Roman adventures.

Avoid: Summer months, when Rome can feel like an open-air oven and the lack of air conditioning in historic sites makes exploring less enjoyable.

Plan to spend about 3 hours exploring the castle, including a break at the rooftop café.

🏛️ How to Get to Castel Sant’Angelo

Walking: The best way! We strolled from our hotel near Via Giuseppe Zanardelli, and it was an easy, scenic walk.
Public Transport:
- Metro: Take Line A to Lepanto station, then walk 15 minutes (about 1 km).
- Bus & Tram: Multiple routes stop nearby.
