The Basilica of Sacré Coeur de Montmartre
Climb up the winding streets of Montmartre, and be rewarded with stunning panoramic views of the City of Lights from the steps of Sacré-Coeur. Someone wrote a tip that the views from Sacré Coeur are better than the view in Eiffel Tower. This iconic white-domed basilica is one of Paris’ most popular tourist attractions, and for good reason. Its striking architecture, rich history, and spiritual significance make it a must-see for any visitor to the city.
History
The construction of Sacré-Coeur was commissioned in 1873 as a national monument to the Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ, and as a symbol of France’s atonement for the sins of the Paris Commune uprising. The basilica was designed by French architect Paul Abadie, and took over 40 years to complete. It was finally consecrated in 1919, and has since become one of the most important religious and cultural sites in Paris.
Architecture
Sacré-Coeur is a stunning example of Romano-Byzantine architecture. Its white dome and towers are made of travertine limestone, which gives the basilica its characteristic gleaming appearance. The interior of the basilica is just as impressive, with its soaring arches, ornate stained-glass windows, and mosaics.
The interior
Once inside Sacré-Coeur, be sure to take some time to admire the basilica’s interior. The nave is particularly impressive, with its soaring arches and stained-glass windows. The apse is also worth a visit, as it is home to a large mosaic depicting Christ in Majesty.
The crypt
The crypt of Sacré-Coeur is home to a number of important religious relics, including the heart of Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque, the nun who is said to have received visions of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ. The crypt is also home to a number of chapels, including the Chapel of the Holy Spirit, which is decorated with mosaics depicting the life of Christ.
The exterior
The exterior of Sacré-Coeur is also worth exploring. The front of the basilica is decorated with a large statue of Christ in Majesty, and the sides of the basilica are decorated with statues of saints and other religious figures.
The experience
It is a trek to the dome top of the church however... if I remember it was around 250-300 steps? My mom powered through it!
When you do make it to the top the views are again worth it!
There is a narrow hallway around the dome that lets you view Paris 360! Enough however for a picture!
Sacré-Coeur is one of Paris’ most iconic landmarks, and a must-see for any visitor to the city. Its stunning architecture, rich history, and spiritual significance make it a truly unique and special place. It is definitely a must visit when going to Paris
