We started off our Vietnam experience in Hanoi. If you have not read about it I suggest you check it our here: Off the Beaten Path Guide to Hanoi Part 1 and Off the Beaten Path Guide to Hanoi Part 2

The day kicked off with a groggy-yet-excited shuffle out of our hotel, where the Cruise team swooped in to pick us up. It was about 2 hours to get to the port where we would ride the boat for the cruise. The journey itself was an eye-fest of emerald green rice paddies dotting the Red River Delta. Mid way to the port we did get to stop to stretch our legs at a pearl processing and selling area. We did not buy any of the pearls but they do teach people a lot about how pearls are formed.

Our boat was called the LeJourney Cruise, the boat itself was nothing to write home about. It was a little old and run down, the food was mediocre at best.

Our room was good for 2 people, I wish we were told that we were going back to our first hotel so we did not have to pack up all of our luggages but with the luggage and ourselves our room was pretty tight.

We were excited to get started as this part of our trip is one of the highlights we've been looking forward to and let me tell you... it did not disappoint.

We have not even gone very far in our cruise and the views are already awe-inspiring. The those limestone rocks and karst grottoes were on a SHOW!

Our schedule was packed though! Just after lunch we only had time to bring our luggage to our rooms and we all had to file out for our Sung Sot Cave tour.

Sung Sot Cave, the jewel of Halong Bay!

Translated as the "Surprise Cave" or "Cave of Surprises," Sung Sot Cave isn't just a random hole in the limestone—it's a geological wonder that's been around for centuries. Legend has it that fishermen discovered it in the late 19th century, but it wasn’t fully explored and documented until the 20th century.

The way to the cave is a bit of a trek but you are always treated to the amazing views of Halong bay.

Nestled on Bo Hon Island, this mammoth cave stretches over 10,000 square meters, boasting not just one chamber but two colossal ones. The first chamber, aptly named "The Waiting Room," sets the stage with its grandeur, but just wait until you step into the second chamber, "The Serenity Room."

The cave's formations—those stalactites and stalagmites—have been meticulously shaped by time, water, and limestone, creating an otherworldly landscape. It’s like stepping into an underground palace adorned with nature's own chandeliers and sculptures. When I say it is massive... it is truly massive.

Over the years, Sung Sot Cave has become one of Halong Bay's top attractions, drawing explorers, geologists, and curious souls like me from all corners of the globe. What's fascinating is that the cave keeps evolving, with new formations slowly taking shape and old ones reshaping themselves—a constant work of art by Mother Nature herself.

Onwards to our next destination!

Ti Top Island

Named after a visit by Russian astronaut Gherman Titov in 1962, Ti Top Island carries a unique historical charm. Legend has it that after the successful journey of the astronaut, President Ho Chi Minh decided to rename the island in his honor during his visit to Halong Bay. So, "Ti Top" is a charming fusion of the astronaut’s last name.

But its story goes deeper than just a name change. This island witnessed a piece of Vietnamese history long before its astronaut-inspired rechristening. During the Vietnam War, this spot served as a strategic location, a hideaway for vessels seeking shelter from the storm of conflict. Fast forward to today, and Ti Top Island has transformed into an icon of natural beauty and leisure. The island's lush greenery, pristine beaches, and crystal-clear waters draw in travelers seeking a serene escape amidst the bay's wonders.

One of its highlights? The hike up to the island’s summit. It's a bit of a climb, but the panoramic view from the top is worth every step. The sight of Halong Bay's emerald waters, limestone karsts, and surrounding islands—it’s a visual symphony that leaves you speechless.

But it's not just about the view—the island also boasts a gorgeous sandy beach, perfect for a dip or a lazy afternoon basking in the Vietnamese sun. We did not have time to swim in the beach because we opted to trek to the top to see the views but we did have time to check out the beach goers

Ti Top Island isn’t just a picturesque spot; it's a testament to nature's resilience and the fusion of history, myth, and modern-day tranquility. Visiting here isn't just a visit to a beautiful island; it's a nod to the island's journey through time—a blend of past valor and present-day serenity in the heart of Halong Bay.

After the Ti Top Island adventure, we went back to our boat to clean up and have dinner. The cruise group had prepared activities for that night which was drinks and karaoke but we were too tired for the night activities. We have an early start so it is off to bed for us

Morning at Ha Long Bay

We wanted to try out the Tai Chi class which was the first activity of the morning so we set the alarm for an ungodly hour, but trust me, catching the sunrise at this wonder of nature was worth every yawn.

After 30 minutes of Tai Chi and some coffee, we head out to Luon Cave!

Luon Cave

Luon Cave—a stunning spot in Halong Bay that's not only a haven of natural beauty but also home to some adorable, cheeky residents: the monkeys!

I do not know how to swim but I've not let that stop me from engaging in water activities specially if the pay off is like this. You get a life vest so off we go!

What makes Luon Cave special is its hidden lagoon within. To access it, you rent a kayak and paddle through a narrow archway, almost like entering a secret passageway into another world.

Luckily the waves were not very strong even with the skies being overcast. As you navigate further into the heart of Luon Cave, the enclosed space opens up into a breathtaking emerald-green lagoon, framed by sheer limestone cliffs. Surrounded by the majestic cliffs, the lagoon offers a sense of seclusion and peacefulness that's hard to find elsewhere. The sheer beauty of this hidden spot, embraced by the cave's walls, creates an almost mystical ambiance.

Exploring Luon Cave isn’t just about witnessing nature's artistry; it’s an immersive experience, a journey into a secluded paradise that leaves you in awe of Halong Bay’s mesmerizing offerings. Whether you're a nature enthusiast or a seeker of serene hideaways, Luon Cave paints a picture of tranquility and natural wonder that lingers long after you've left its peaceful waters.

Ha Long Bay

Ha Long Bay Cruise Tips

Embarking on a Ha Long Bay cruise is a quintessential Vietnamese adventure, offering a mesmerizing blend of natural beauty and cultural richness. To ensure your journey is both memorable and seamless, consider the following essential tips:

Choose the Right Cruise for Your Style

Ha Long Bay boasts a plethora of cruise options, from budget-friendly day trips to opulent overnight voyages. Reflect on your preferences and budget to select the cruise that aligns with your travel aspirations. For a more intimate and tranquil experience, consider exploring Bai Tu Long Bay, a less crowded alternative that retains a sense of wilderness and serenity.

Optimal Timing for Your Voyage

The period from September to December is ideal for visiting Ha Long Bay, offering moderate temperatures and minimal rainfall. However, be mindful of the potential for typhoons between June and September, which can lead to unexpected cancellations. Always check the weather forecast and have a flexible itinerary to accommodate any changes.

Pack Smart for the Journey

Prepare for a variety of activities by packing essentials such as swimwear, comfortable walking shoes, sun protection, and light rain gear. While most cruises provide meals, beverages are typically not included, so bringing your own water and snacks can be both convenient and cost-effective

Engage in Onboard Activities

Enhance your cruise experience by participating in activities like kayaking, cave explorations, and cooking classes. These offerings provide deeper insights into the bay's natural wonders and Vietnamese culture. For instance, many cruises offer excursions to caves such as Thien Canh Son, where you can marvel at stunning stalactites and stalagmites.

Plan Your Transportation

Most cruise operators offer transportation to and from Hanoi, but it's essential to arrange this in advance. Selecting the transportation add-on during booking can simplify your journey. For example, many travelers opt for a limousine bus from their hotel in Hanoi's Old Quarter to the cruise departure point in Ha Long Bay.

Coordinate Flights and Hotels Strategically

When planning your Ha Long Bay adventure, booking your flights and accommodations with care can save both time and stress. Opt to fly into Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi, as it’s the most convenient gateway to Ha Long Bay. Arriving a day early allows you to acclimate, explore Hanoi's vibrant Old Quarter, and avoid the stress of same-day travel to the port.

For hotels, look for ones offering early check-in or luggage storage if you’re catching an early cruise departure. Staying in Hanoi’s Old Quarter ensures proximity to shuttle pick-ups and great local dining options. If you want a head start, consider overnighting closer to Ha Long Bay, in cities like Tuan Chau or Bai Chay, to cut down on morning travel time.

By thoughtfully preparing and choosing a cruise that aligns with your interests, your Ha Long Bay adventure will be an unforgettable highlight of your Vietnamese travels.
