Exploring St. Louis on a Budget: 10 Free Must-Do Activities in the Gateway City

Welcome to St. Louis, where the Mississippi River meets the Midwest!


Before moving to Missouri I did not know much about this awesome city! Consequently, the first thing I did was make a list of all the things I would like to see to get to know the city I call home!


Whether you’re a local or just passing through, there’s always something to explore in this vibrant city. From towering monuments to lush parks, and from historical sites to outdoor art, here’s your guide to the best free activities in St. Louis, MO.


Gateway Arch

No trip to St. Louis is complete without a visit to the iconic Gateway Arch. Standing at 630 feet, this gleaming stainless-steel monument is the tallest arch in the world and offers stunning views of the city and the Mississippi River.

Best Time to Visit: Early morning or late afternoon to avoid the crowds and enjoy the best lighting for photos.


Insider Tips: Head to the Arch grounds in the evening for a picturesque sunset view. The museum at the base is free and provides a fascinating history of westward expansion.


Forest Park

Larger than Central Park, Forest Park is a green oasis in the heart of St. Louis. It’s home to a myriad of attractions, including the St. Louis Zoo, the Missouri History Museum, and the Muny, all of which are free.

Year-Round Activities: Enjoy biking, jogging, or a leisurely walk through the park. Winter brings ice skating at Steinberg Skating Rink.


Tips for First-Time Visitors: Hop on to the bike and pedestrian-friendly trail that loops around the park. It takes you around the park and you can see gems of the park as you tour one of my favorite parks!


City Garden

Citygarden is an urban sculpture park located in downtown St. Louis, featuring interactive art installations and lush landscapes. It’s the perfect spot for a stroll or a picnic.

Best Times to Visit: Spring and fall when the weather is mild, and the gardens are in full bloom.


Insider Tips: Look out for the splash pads in the summer—great for cooling off! The park is beautifully illuminated at night, offering a completely different experience.


Grant's Farm

Originally owned by Ulysses S. Grant, Grant’s Farm is a historic farm and wildlife park. It’s home to over 900 animals and offers a glimpse into the area’s history and natural beauty.

Best Times to Visit: Weekdays in the late spring or early fall to avoid the crowds.


Insider Tips: Take advantage of the free tram rides through Deer Park and be sure to visit the Clydesdales in their stables. At the end of your ride you would get a free sample of the Anheuser Busch product and you get to relax and enjoy the rest of your day in the patio area


St. Louis Zoo

One of the best zoos in the country, the St. Louis Zoo offers free admission and a chance to see more than 18,000 animals from 700 species.

Best Time to Visit: Early in the morning or late afternoon, especially on cooler days when the animals are more active. Also parking can be difficult so arrive early to secure your spot!


Tips for Making the Most of Your Visit: Wear comfortable shoes, bring a picnic lunch, and check the daily schedule for animal shows and feedings.


Anheuser-Busch Brewery Tour

Take a free tour of the historic Anheuser-Busch Brewery, home of Budweiser. Learn about the brewing process, visit the stables of the world-famous Clydesdales, and enjoy free samples of their products.

Year-Round Availability: Tours are available year-round, but check the schedule in advance.


Insider Tips: The Biergarten is a great place to relax after your tour. If you're visiting during the holiday season, don't miss the brewery's festive lights display.


Missouri History Museum

Located in Forest Park, the Missouri History Museum offers free admission to its engaging exhibits that cover everything from the 1904 World’s Fair to the city’s baseball legacy.

Best Times to Visit: Weekday afternoons when it's typically quieter.


Tips for History Enthusiasts: Don’t miss the museum’s special exhibitions, which are often free as well. The museum’s café offers a nice spot to rest and recharge.


Laumeier Sculpture Park

Laumeier Sculpture Park is an open-air museum and sculpture park covering 105 acres. It features more than 60 outdoor sculptures and hosts a variety of art programs. Did you know it is dog-friendly?!

Best Times to Visit: Spring and fall when the weather is perfect for an outdoor stroll.


Insider Tips: Wear comfortable shoes and bring a camera. The park is great for photography, especially during golden hour.


The Muny

The Muny in Forest Park is America’s oldest and largest outdoor musical theater. Each summer, it offers a lineup of Broadway-style shows, with free seats available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Best Times to Visit: During the summer season, typically from mid-June to mid-August.


Tips for a Great Experience: Arrive early to claim your free seat. Bring a blanket or cushion for comfort, and don’t forget the bug spray and snacks!


St. Louis Science Center

Engage your curiosity at the St. Louis Science Center, where admission is free. Explore interactive exhibits, a planetarium, and even a bridge over Interstate 64 with a view of the cars below.
