San Francisco holds a special place in my heart because it was one of the first places Kevin and I visited after we got married. It’s where fog meets fun, and every street led us to a new adventure. Whether you’re drawn to iconic landmarks or searching for hidden gems, this city has everything outdoor lovers and thrill-seekers like us could want. So grab your partner (or just your sense of adventure), and let’s explore!

Here’s a peek into some must-see spots, with a side of humor, practical tips, and a dash of history from our own journey.

Best Time to Visit San Francisco (and Why You Should Book Your Trip Now!)

San Francisco is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit really depends on what you're looking for. If you want fewer crowds and mild weather, late spring (April to June) or early fall (September to November) are perfect. During these months, the famous summer fog ("Karl the Fog") thins out, giving you clearer views of the Golden Gate Bridge and better weather for outdoor activities.

Summer may bring more tourists, but it’s also packed with festivals and events, so if you're into a lively city vibe, it’s a great option too. Winters are cooler but still enjoyable, and it’s a quieter time to explore without the summer crowds.

Why You Should Book Now: Flight and hotel prices tend to rise the closer you get to your travel date, especially during peak times. To snag the best deals, start looking at flights and accommodations as early as possible. Booking your hotel in advance means you’ll have more options in prime areas, and you can lock in lower rates before prices go up. San Francisco’s popularity as a travel destination means hotels fill up quickly, so don’t wait—secure your trip now for an unforgettable adventure!

Alcatraz: The Island of No Escape (Or So They Say)

When Kevin and I visited San Francisco, I was most excited about Alcatraz. Historic places always capture my interest, and this infamous prison was at the top of my list. Walking through the eerie hallways where some of the most notorious criminals once lived—it was like stepping into a live history book. The stories of daring escape attempts, prison riots, and life on “The Rock” made Alcatraz one of the most fascinating parts of our trip. For me, it wasn’t just another tourist stop—it was the kind of destination that pulls you in with its rich history and leaves you wanting more.

Pro Tip: Book your tickets early—like, now. Alcatraz tours tend to sell out weeks in advance. If you’re into spooky vibes, check out the night tour for extra chills. The early morning tours are great for avoiding crowds and snapping moody fog-covered pics.

Don’t Miss: The audio tour is a must. It’s like having a former inmate whisper stories of riots and escape attempts in your ear, but, you know, in a cool way. Bonus: The ferry ride across the bay offers stellar views of the city skyline and Golden Gate Bridge.

Riding the Cable Car: Hanging On for Dear Life

San Francisco’s cable cars are a bucket list staple, and for good reason. These clanging, vintage beauties have been carting folks up and down the city’s steep hills since 1873. Think of it as a roller coaster, but more historic—and you don’t have to scream (unless you want to).

Pro Tip: Skip the long lines at Powell Street and head to one of the quieter stops like Van Ness Avenue. Early morning or late afternoon rides are your best bet for fewer crowds. Oh, and have $8 cash ready or grab a Clipper Card if you’re planning to zip around on public transit all day.

Adventure Hack: For the full experience, stand on the outside rail and hold on tight! It’s the most thrilling way to take in the city, even if your knuckles get a little white.

Fisherman’s Wharf: Chowder, Sea Lions, and Chill Vibes

Yeah, Fisherman’s Wharf is a tourist magnet, but even the most seasoned adventurer will enjoy the breezy waterfront charm. Start by grabbing a sourdough bread bowl filled with clam chowder, and then stroll down to Pier 39 to watch the sea lions argue over the best sunbathing spots.

Pro Tip: Hit up the Wharf in the morning for fresher seafood and fewer crowds. You’ll thank me when you’re cracking into a Dungeness crab without fighting elbow-to-elbow with other tourists. And yes, the sourdough really is that good.

Off-the-Beaten-Path Gem: Want a quieter spot with stunning views? Head over to Aquatic Park Cove, just a short walk away, for a peaceful place to soak in the bay views, picnic, or take a dip (if you’re brave).

Golden Gate Bridge: A Walk in the Clouds

Ah, the Golden Gate Bridge. Even if you’ve seen a million pictures of it, there’s nothing like walking across its 1.7 miles of iconic, orange steel. Adventurous couples will love the sense of achievement that comes with hiking or biking across, with sweeping views of the city on one side and the Pacific Ocean on the other.

Pro Tip: Early mornings are prime for a peaceful walk across the bridge, but prepare for fog (a.k.a. Karl the Fog, as locals lovingly call it). If you want to see the bridge and the views, check the weather before you go—you might luck out with a clear day. Unfortunately, it was really foggy when we went, nevertheless it was an awesome experience.

For the Adventurous: After you cross the bridge, head to the Marin Headlands. It’s a beautiful area with easy hiking trails and fewer tourists, where you’ll get some of the most stunning views of the bridge with the city in the background.

Lombard Street: Navigating the Zigzags

Lombard Street is famous for being the “crookedest street in the world,” but let me tell you—getting there was its own kind of twisty adventure! Traffic was a nightmare, so I ditched the car and walked instead (probably a faster choice, honestly). After hiking up those steep hills, I finally made it to Lombard, only to find it packed with tourists trying to snap the perfect pic. Getting a decent shot without someone in the frame? Easier said than done!

But honestly, it wasn’t the street’s famous zigzags that impressed me the most—it was the landscaping. The flowers and greenery along the street were absolutely stunning! The perfectly manicured gardens winding down the hillside were way more mesmerizing than the curves themselves. It felt like walking through a beautifully designed botanical garden that just so happens to have cars slowly zigzagging through it. Definitely an unexpected highlight!

Pro Tip: Go early to avoid the throngs of tourists attempting the perfect Instagram shot while blocking the street. The soft morning light also makes the flower-lined road look even more charming.

For Extra Fun: Feeling brave? Try biking down Lombard Street. Just make sure your brakes are in top shape—this street isn’t messing around when it comes to sharp corners!

Book Your Tours in Advance!

San Francisco is packed with must-see attractions, and if you want to make the most of your trip, it’s smart to plan ahead and book tours early. Whether it’s walking across the Golden Gate Bridge, exploring Alcatraz, or riding the famous cable cars, tickets can sell out quickly, especially during peak travel seasons. By securing your spots in advance, you’ll avoid last-minute hassles and guarantee you don’t miss out on the best experiences. Plus, many tours offer early-bird deals or special access that can make your adventure even more memorable. So get ahead of the game and book your tours before you arrive—you’ll thank yourself later!
